The reason that there was no question about the library is simple - with
all the requirements for residency/fellowship programs from ACGME, there
is no requirement to have a library. And the wording about access to
electronic resources is short and general. Nothing new, and yes, we
should remind MLA that this no requirement for having a library is
"killing" many teaching hospitals.

Hi,
MLA has tried very hard to improve this situation. One of the Vital
Pathways Task Force subcommittees was on the role of the librarian in
medical education, see
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2759163/. Letters have been
written to ACGME but unfortunately, to date they have not been
interested in improving the library requirements.

I find this soooo interesting. The ACGME survey showed our residents thought their LOUNGE was inadequate
So where did the new lounge space come from??? You got it!
We lost over 500 sq ft of space from the library.

We have independently and annually surveyed our residents in our two
teaching hospitals for many years about the library and its services.
The results have helped us in many ways. When planning for new expanded
library space, resident's comments from the survey enabled us to double
our new space in 2006 and add two new quiet study rooms. We always share
the results with our own administration because the results and comments
always dramatically demonstrate how valuable the libraries here are to
our nearly 290 residents and fellows.

I think that the article is great, it may be a good support for this or
another Task Force, but we need much stronger action from MLA. And an
action that doesn't end. It must be somebody in ACGME who will listen.
Yes, we know that library existence and support depends very much on
hospital administration, but many will follow ACGME surveys and their
recommendations. And MLA shouldn't stop to fight about changes in their
requirements, surveys and recommendations.

Many thanks to Vislava Tylman, Margaret Bandy, Jean Henderson, Christine
Chastain-Warheit, and Halyna Liszczynskyj who provided their valuable
comments regarding this important issue. The article recommended by
Margaret (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2759163/) is very
helpful. Another comment was about the importance of conducting our own
surveys for residents and fellows and sharing the results with our
hospital administration; this will demonstrate how valuable the libraries
are for GME. And yes, we need stronger action from the MLA and have to
keep working on it.
Thanks to all of you again.

[Hls-list] CHAT: Resident/Fellow Survey
Good morning everyone,
I'm a member of the Graduate Medical Education Committee at my hospital.
During one of the last meetings that I attended, the results of the
Resident/Fellow Survey have been discussed. This survey made by the ACGME
is very detailed: it includes about a hundred questions covering all areas
of resident activities at the hospital. I've been looking thoroughly
through this survey trying to find any questions mentioning the medical
library. I found just one that somehow (not directly) may relate to the
library services:
- How often are you able to access, either in print or electronic format,
the specialty specific and other reference materials that you need?
Since it's not specified, which kind of reference materials residents may
look for, the answer to this question cannot accurately reflect the
quality of library services. And that was the only question among a
hundred plus that I could find.
Our library (as any other hospital library) provides a lot of services for
residents and fellows, including access to information resources,
training, etc. For this reason I believe it would be logical if the survey
included a couple of questions related to the medical library. This would
help us to improve our services and remind the hospital administration
about our importance.
I'm wondering what other people think about it: do you believe it's
possible to change this situation? Perhaps, the MLA might address this
issue and contact the ACGME with a request to include some questions in
the survey. Would it make sense? Please share your thoughts with your
colleagues. Thanks a lot.

Hi All,
I was the on the Vital Pathways task force on Medical Education. MLA
is very aware and has contacts with the ACGME. Our task force found
that the Osteopathic residency accreditation standards for knowledge
based resources was an excellent model that ACGME might adopt; however
it was technically outside the scope of the task force's work and
therefore we could not really discuss it in the JMLA article published
last fall, nor study the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation
standards in depth. The COCA web site is at:
http://www.do-online.org/index.cfm?PageID=acc_predoc . There is a
link there to the new accreditation standards which went into effect
this month.
Also there is a chart listing the upcoming site visits. Unfortunately,
the ACGME doesn't seem to publish a list of upcoming site visits, or if
they invite public comments. If they did, it is certainly something
hospital librarians would want to respond to.
