Westport, Sherwood Island State Park

Species seen -

Glossy Ibis
Greater Yellowlegs
Killdeer
Snowy Egret
Baltimore Oriole

saw a wren of some sort. maybe a marsh wren? very bold white eye stripe.

I'm a herper and was there looking for terrapins, but I couldn't help but break out my binocs!

How common are cattle egrets these days? I remember seeing them in Norwalk 20 years ago but I've heard they aren't seen much anymore.

An immature Northern Goshawk was perched in the Tamarack stand located northeast of the intersection of Shaker Road and Bilton Road at the Somers/Enfield Prison Property this morning at about 8:00 am - big bird. I meant to post that sighing earlier today - sorry.

Also, maybe it's the cooler weather, but I have started to see a lot of new birds through the area in Somers, CT. White-throated sparrows are back in my yard (I have not seen or heard one since late June), and I am seeing a few warblers as well (1B&W, 2BTG and 1Magnolia this morning). A pair of red-breasted NHs were at my sunflower seed feeder yesterday (first of the year), and 15-20 common night hawks passed by last night as well around 7:30 (they were heading in a generally northeast direction?).

9/10/10 The birds are on the move, warblers at Bluff Point and Quaker Ridge, and hawks at Lighthouse Point and Quaker Ridge. For the next two weeks at inland lookouts Broadwings will be the dominate migrant. Already reports are in from Chestnut Hill, Botsford Hill, and West Hartford. In this period there should be three or four days, when winds are out of the northwest to northeast, when the bulk of the Broadwings (maybe hundreds) and some other hawks will pass.
Some of the inland lookouts are Chestnut Hill, Middle School, Booth Hill, Botsford Hill, Flat Hill, Johnnycake Mountain, and Booth Memorial Park. For direction to these go to www.hawkcount.org, click on Month Summaries, scroll to a lookout, select it, then click on Site Profile to find a map locating the lookout.

September 14- Southbury.  There will be no hawk watch at Flat Hill in Southbury this year, contrary to a previous announcement here.  Birders will be watching at the other inland watch sites, however.
