Watchung 9-11 Memorial Committee
Public Announcement and Request for Public Input:
(Last Revised 8-26-2011)
Dear Citizens and Neighbors of Watchung,
The Borough of Watchung has received a piece of steel taken from the
wreckage of the World Trade Center from the Port Authority of New York and
New Jersey for use in a September 11th Memorial in Watchung. A committee of
local volunteers is beginning to plan a fitting setting for this
historically significant item and would appreciate your ideas and support.
The dimensions of the piece of steel provided to Watchung are 6 inches by 5
inches by 1 inch thick (The attached picture is of the actual piece). There
are many conceptual and practical decisions to be considered regarding how
best to incorporate this piece of American history into Watchung's Village
Green for this and future generations.
The committee would appreciate any comments, ideas, and/or sketches (size
8-1/2" x 11" preferred) that will help to create a memorial that will
enhance the beauty of our public space, and also provide a lasting reminder
of the citizens of Watchung and all those people who lost their lives on
September 11, 2001, all the brave and tireless Emergency Responders, and the
entire generation of Americans that endured this national tragedy.
Please send any comments and design ideas, as well as any offers to provide
contributions or any assistance, to the Watchung 9-11 Memorial Committee's
attention at Watchung Borough Hall, 15 Mountain Blvd. or email to
. Submissions should be sent no later than
October 9, 2011. Please do not hesitate to call Linda Monetti at Watchung
Borough Hall at (908) 756-0080 with any questions or comments. Thank you.

Donate Canned or Boxed Food,
Personal-Care Items on BOBO Friday
Next Collection Sept. 16
The next Buy One, Bring One (BOBO) collection of food and personal-care
items for needy families in Somerset County will be held Friday, Sept. 16.
The Food Bank Network of Somerset County has seen additional demand since
floodwaters displaced many residents last month.
Public drop-off locations include:
§ Somerset County Administration Building, 20 Grove St., Somerville
§ Somerset County/Bridgewater Library, North Bridge Street & Vogt Drive,
Bridgewater
§ Park Commission Headquarters, 355 Milltown Road, Bridgewater
§ Environmental Education Center, 190 Lord Stirling Road, Basking Ridge
§ Lord Stirling Stable, 256 S. Maple Ave., Basking Ridge
Look for the blue BOBO Friday bins at these locations.
Canned or boxed food items are accepted at the administration building and
library. Personal-care items, including bath soap, deodorant, toothpaste,
shampoo and toilet paper, also are collected since these items are not
covered by food stamps.
Canned food or personal-care items only are collected at the Environmental
Education Center, Lord Stirling Stable and Park Commission Headquarters;
boxed food cannot be accepted at these locations, as it may be exposed to
the weather or small animals.
Freeholder Deputy Director Patricia Walsh launched BOBO Fridays in July
2010, first as a way for county employees to help supplement the Food Bank
Network of Somerset County’s monthly food supplies, and then as a way for
the public to donate as well. The program has collected over 6,000 pounds of
donations to date.
The third Friday was chosen for the BOBO program so that donations would be
delivered by the end of the month, when the Food Bank Network needs them
most. However, the bins are available every day, not just on the third
Friday, so donations may be dropped off at any time during regular business
hours at all locations.

Education Center, Lord Stirling Stable and Park Commission Headquarters;
boxed food cannot be accepted at these locations, as it may be exposed to
the weather or small animals.

Governor Christie has declared a State of Emergency. As of November 1st -
this directive is still in effect.
The Borough has numerous downed live power lines, downed trees, closed
roads, and overall hazardous conditions. Please read the following
important safety tips from PSE&G:
. Downed wires should always be considered "live." STAY AWAY FROM
ALL DOWNED LINES. Do not approach or drive over a downed line and do not
touch anything with which it might be in contact. To report a downed wire
or other visible equipment damage, call 1-800-436-PSEG (7734). Provide the
street as well as the nearest cross street.
. Check on the well-being of elderly neighbors. See if they are
safe and if they need extra blankets or other help.
. Caution: Do not try to use a gas oven or range to heat a room.
The appliance will deplete oxygen from the air, causing asphyxiation or
deadly carbon monoxide poisoning.
. To report a power outage, call PSE&G's Customer Service line:
1-800-436-PSEG (7734).
. Electric crews work to restore power to the largest numbers of
customers first, taking into account "priority" customers, such as
hospitals, police stations, fire stations, schools, and customers on
life-sustaining medical equipment. At the same time, the utility restores
power to homes and businesses, starting with the circuits serving the
largest number of customers.
. Customers with a handheld device, or who are at an alternate
location with power, can also report power outages and view the status of
their outage by logging in to My Account at pseg.com. General outage
activity throughout our service territory is available online at

Education Center, Lord Stirling Stable and Park Commission Headquarters;
boxed food cannot be accepted at these locations, as it may be exposed to
the weather or small animals.

Education Center, Lord Stirling Stable and Park Commission Headquarters;
boxed food cannot be accepted at these locations, as it may be exposed to
the weather or small animals.

§ Somerset County Administration Building, 20 Grove St., Somerville
§ Somerset County/Bridgewater Library, North Bridge Street & Vogt Drive,
Bridgewater
§ Park Commission Headquarters, 355 Milltown Road, Bridgewater
§ Environmental Education Center, 190 Lord Stirling Road, Basking Ridge

Canned or boxed food items are accepted at the administration building and

Somerset County to Hold Two Saturday Drop-off Events In June
First Saturday of the Month Drop-off Scheduled for June 2
BRIDGEWATER - Somerset County residents can take advantage of the next First
Saturday of the Month Drop-off
7.pdf> event to clean up around their homes and yards. The event will be
held on June 2 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Somerset County Recycling
Center, located at 40 Polhemus Lane.
First Saturday drop-off events enable busy residents to recycle outdated
electronics, tires, clean textiles and usual curbside items in one fell
swoop, as well as help people in the community who are less fortunate by
donating food items for a local food bank.
As part of the program, residents can drop off up to eight tires - with or
without rims, scrap metal, antifreeze and usual curbside materials,
including chipboard items and plastic bottles and containers, marked #1
through #7. Chipboard includes gift, shoe, shirt and all retail boxes, as
well as cereal, cookie, pasta, cake and cracker boxes, without the plastic
liners. Also poster board and backing from writing pads are accepted. In
addition, residents may drop off empty, dried-out steel paint cans.
Residents also have the option of disposing of clean dry textiles throughout
the year by bringing them to scheduled Saturday drop-off events. Textiles
include drapes, curtains, sheets, towels, belts, handbags, shoes (pairs),
clean cloth and small stuffed animals. Textiles only will be accepted in a
plastic bag.
Additionally, residents can drop off consumer electronics (e-waste). E-waste
includes computers (CPUs), servers, monitors, terminals/CRTs, televisions,
printers, fax machines, copiers, computer/laptop peripherals,
telecommunication equipment (telephones, cell phones/smartphones, telephone
mainframes), keyboards, mice, cables, wiring, circuit boards, modems, power
supplies, laptops, docking stations, audio visual equipment, electronic
tablets, eReaders and chargers for electronic devices.
Also typewriters, VCRs, mainframe equipment and controllers, camcorders,
CDs, DVDs, computer disks, diskettes, videotapes, cassette tapes, and
rechargeable and button-cell batteries will be accepted. Residents should
individually bag each battery or tape each terminal to avoid
short-circuiting of batteries.
Residents also can drop off electronics at Newtech Recycling Inc., located
at 600A Apgar Drive, Somerset 08873, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Both
drop-off opportunities are free. For more information about Newtech
Recycling Inc. contact them at (732) 564-3110 or www.newtechrecycling.com
.
No household hazardous waste will be accepted at First Saturday Drop-off
events. The next Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off event will be on June 9
in Hillsborough. For more information, contact the Somerset County Division
of Solid Waste Management at (908) 231-7031 or .
For a complete listing of recyclable items, recycling events and much more,
visit www.co.somerset.nj.us/recycle or call the Somerset County Recycling
Center at (732) 469-3363.
Residents wishing to help the needy during these difficult economic times
now have two opportunities. They can continue to bring canned goods and
non-perishable food donations to First Saturday Drop-off events or they can
put out canned goods in a plastic bag on their usual recycling pickup dates.
Items will be delivered to the Food Bank Network of Somerset County.
Perishable items and foods in glass containers are not accepted by food
banks.
Residents Can Drop-off Household Hazardous Waste on June 9
HILLSBOROUGH - Now's a good time to start your spring cleaning of
hazardous waste items in your garage, basement or other storage areas.
Somerset County will be holding a Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off
5.pdf> event for Somerset County homeowners and farmers on Saturday, June
9, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South County Public Works Garage, located at
410 Roycefield Road 08844.
Additional Household Hazardous Waste drop-off days will be held on Aug. 4,
Sept. 15 and Oct. 27 at different locations.
No registration is necessary, but proof of Somerset County residency is
required. The program is free to county residents.
Household hazardous waste includes banned or outdated pesticides,
antifreeze, transmission fluids, brake fluids, wet-cell car batteries, motor
oil (2-gallon maximum), ammonia-based cleaners, gasoline, kerosene,
oil-based paints, pool chemicals, propane tanks and rechargeable and
button-cell batteries.
Residents can help prevent mercury from entering the environment by dropping
off mercury-containing devices such as thermometers and mercury switches,
compact fluorescent light bulbs, fluorescent tubes and old thermostats.
No tires, electronics (computers and televisions), infectious waste, gas
cylinders, smoke detectors, air conditioners or dehumidifiers will be
accepted at Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off events.
Residents can dispose of tires and used consumer electronics each month at
First Saturday of the Month Drop-off

propane tanks were collected.

Education Center, Lord Stirling Stable and Park Commission Headquarters;
boxed food cannot be accepted at these locations, as it may be exposed to
the weather or small animals.

General outage
activity throughout our service territory is available online at
www.pseg.com/outagecenter

Utility repair crews are in town and aggressively working to restore power

Education Center, Lord Stirling Stable and Park Commission Headquarters;
boxed food cannot be accepted at these locations, as it may be exposed to
the weather or small animals.

General outage
activity throughout our service territory is available online at
www.pseg.com/outagecenter

00/www.pseg.com/outagecenter> and updates are posted on pseg.com during

Utility repair crews are in town and aggressively working to restore power
to everyone.

For more information, contact the Somerset County Division

visit www.co.somerset.nj.us/recycle or call the Somerset County Recycling
