Subject: 2nd Saturday Birdwalk
About 15 birders showed up for the 2nd Saturday bird walk at Muddy Creek
this morning. It was a very productive group, observing 37 bird species and
one rabbit. This results in a robust 2.5 birds/person ratio. I'm
impressed. Everyone has their favorite birds, but I was particularly happy
with the Scarlet Tanager and the White-eyed Vireo we saw. We got a great
look at the vireo. Killian located the tanager for us. Birds seen by one
person - Eastern Meadowlark (Killian) and Worm-eating Warbler (me).
We all heard the Yellow-breasted Chat (3), who continuously encouraged us to
go away. They obviously wanted to complain about us, but didn't want to
visit. A couple of us heard a Blue Grosbeak and may have seen it in the
distance. We looked hard for the Orchard Orioles, reported earlier this
week, but they must have been out for the morning.
I offered a lucrative award for the first person to find a Song Sparrow
($1.00), but with the exception of Katherine, who heard one before the award
was announced, we drew a blank on this bird normally quite noticeable at
Muddy Creek. (Katherine, the next time I see you, I'll give you the dollar,
since your observation turned out to be significant.)
In the list below I have indicated those birds we heard only. If I have
left out any birds, please let me know and I'll amend our list.
Looking forward to the next 2nd Saturday! The best, Carol
