PEATC, the Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center, is celebrating 34 years of service to families of children with disabilities and those who work with families. There have been many beneficial changes for everyone involved, and our work continues. Our goal is to build better futures for children with disabilities by working collaboratively with families, schools and professionals to improve their opportunities for excellence in education and success in school and community life.

The Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) for Hanover County Public Schools will hold an open house at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 5, at the Hanover School Board Office at 20 Berkley St. in Ashland.

The committee is accepting applications for membership. Parents and members of the community interested in joining are encouraged to attend the open house.

The mission of SEAC is to promote educational excellence for students with disabilities throughout Hanover County by encouraging collaborative partnerships, supporting an inclusive educational environment, and recommending best practices that will prepare students for productive citizenship.

SEAC advises the local school division of unmet needs in the education of students with disabilities and assists in the formulation and development of plans for improving their performance and meeting their identified needs.

The committee submits recommendations to the division superintendent, assists the local school division in interpreting plans to the community, and reviews policies and procedures for the provision of special education and related services prior to submission to the local School Board and the Virginia Department of Education.

SEAC meets once a month during the school year. Six of those meetings are open to the public and are an opportunity to share successful educational experiences and express general concerns regarding educational issues for students with disabilities.

For more information, contact the Hanover County Public Schools Parent Resource Center at 365-4596 or Cyndi Hartung, chairman, at 651-2708.

Applications also are available on the Parent Resource Center website at http://hcps.us/instruction/parentresouce.

The deadline for applications is May 15.
