*Background* : Medical Justice is a growing network of volunteer medics,
lawyers, ex-detainees, and campaigners who arrange for independent doctors
to visit detainees, including children and torture victims, in 10
immigration removal centres and detention facilities around the UK. The
doctors document detainees' scars of torture and/or serious medical
conditions that may affect their immigration claim. The doctors also help
detainees access adequate healthcare while they are detained. We strongly
suggest you watch the Medical Justice "Fit to Fly ?"
film
(10
mins) before you consider applying for this job.
Some detainees' legal representatives may be able to get funding for some
of the doctors' work, but much of it is done on a pro-bono basis. None of
the doctors are employed by Medical Justice and any medico-legal reports
are written by them as independent doctors. Further development of
guidelines are key for the benefit doctor, Medical Justice, and the
detainees.
In response to medical abuse we have exposed and with evidence from our
case-work, we seek to secure lasting change through legal challenges,
discussing policy with UK Border Agency and their healthcare providers,
working with the media and parliamentarians.
Medical Justice was founded in 2005 by an ex-detainee and the doctor who
helped secure his access to hospital. Since then, Medical Justice has
helped many detainees access medical care that they had been previously
denied. Many of these detainees have been released. We deal with about
1,000 referrals a year. This has been achieved through the dedication of
volunteers and despite relatively little funding. We have a small office
in Finsbury Park where our four paid full-time workers are based.
Medical Justice offers an exciting opportunity to join a small but dynamic
team and to play a key role in developing the strategic direction of the
orgnaisation, taking Medical Justice to the next level.
