Have you ever thought about volunteering? Do you need to plump out the
resume before finding a great summer job? Or do have a few hours this
summer to devote to a really fun place to work with art, kids and museums?

As the Coordinator of the Art Discovery Center at the GWV Smith Museum
at the Springfield Museums and Dr. Seuss Sculpture Park, I would like to
encourage Smith College students of any major, to apply for volunteer
positions at the ADC studio, where parents and children drop in to make
art. Springfield Residents have free admission, so the Art Discovery
Center has a very loyal following. But we also receive many people from
Connecticut, New York and Western Massachusetts.

On a quiet day, we receive a couple of dozen visitors, and on a big
day, four hundred visitors cycle through. The ADC needs a team of
dependable college students to show the young visitors how to use make
art. There's more than just art making to get involved in. The walls of
the Center are painted with brilliant Buddhist murals, based mostly on
the Tibetan and Nepalese traditions. Visitors love to hear about the
symbols and the artist behind the work. A volunteer might chose an
object and design an art project based on
it. Because the responsibilities are very basic: (greet and guide
visitors, keep the studio clean), there is room to personalize the
opportunity to your needs.
