The same trade union (Solidarnosc) supported neoliberal shock therapies of early 1990s designed  by IMF and the World Bank. Consistently, in  late 1990s they supported  neoliberal conservative government (with prime minister Buzek, who is the head of of EU Parliament now) that introduced neoliberal  social sector reforms (again with the help of the World Bank) that started with marketization and lead to  privatization of social sectors (health, care, social protection, pensions, education). Recently, the chair of this trade union gave an interview in which he supported the Civic Allance (neoliberal party in government). The same guy is now leading protests int he streets.   Â
This is an element of the spectacle of democracy when workers are mobilized to protest against austerity measures while their trade union and votes are supporting neoliberal goverrnment that  introduce the same policies. In Poland, the only choice in parliamentary politics is between  neoliberal left  and conservative-neoliberalsÂ
Or, as Walter Benjamin once mentioned: Â
" Fascism attempts to organize the newly created proletarian masses without
affecting the property structure which the masses strive to eliminate. Fascism
sees its salvation in giving these masses not their right, but instead a chance
to express themselves. The masses have a right to change property relations;
Fascism seeks to give them an expression while preserving property. The logical
result of Fascism is the introduction of aesthetics into political life." (from an essay n art int he age of mechanical reproduction.
This is not a problem in Poland, only. There are massive social protests, and then neoliberal parties are voted in government.Â

The Solidarnosc trade union demonstration in Warsaw tomorrow is
something we have to comment on.
It's very important in our view for the left, anticapitalists,
alterglobalists etc. to participate in big trade union demonstrations.
The clash between the government and employers on one side and working
people on the other is key in determining whether we can win the
struggle for social justice. Solidarnosc is a real trade union that
takes part in this struggle in workplaces on a daily basis.
We should not decide whether to support such demonstrations based on a
quotation from a union leader. In any case, Ewa, your version of what
Piotr Duda, leader of Solidarnosc, said in the interview is not strictly
accurate. Duda won the union's leadership election in October 2010
partly because he wanted to distance the union from support for the Law
and Justice party which has many fans among the Solidarnosc officials.
In the interview he said that he could not forgive PiS and neoliberal
Civic Platform (main party in today's government coalition) politicians
for not organising a coalition in 2005. This was an attempt, inept to be
sure, to show Solidarnosc does not simply support Law and Justice. Of
course, he made things worse by saying he had wanted a coalition
including the government party that is currently attacking ordinary
people's living standards – including those of his members!
The point is that even if Duda's comments had been worse this is not the
most important thing. They key for us is that thousands of trade
unionists will be on the streets of Warsaw tomorrow demonstrating
against the government policies. If you can make it you should join us
there!
Ewa, you do not even say that the demonstration focuses on raising the
minimum wage and on lowering taxes for the poorest. There will be
placards and banners against privatisation, sackings and cuts.
What on earth possessed you to start talking about fascism in this context.
Of course you are right to point to the neoliberal policies of parties
who get elected to office – but if we want to create an alternative we
should realise that this will be impossible without building solidarity
with workers' protests whether they are organised by Solidarity (with a
big "S") or better still if they are joint protests of all the union
federations.
