Hey gang,
So i'm working on an idea for a fun event we might be able to do. It's just
a protoplasm of an inkling of an idea right now, but I wanted to put it out
there for comment and get some help with fleshing out the way it'll work.
It's based on the Graffiti Mode in the old Tony Hawk games - basically you
had to "tag" all the jumps by doing tricks off them before your opponent
could accomplish the same goal . You could do a better trick than they did
on their colored jump, and regain control of it.
So the idea is that we'd have a set of locations (say 20) where we could
paint on walls - each one monitored by a judge. I think we'd be able to get
lots of small areas of wallspace in the downtown area. There would be teams
of "Taggers" (say 10 teams) who would paint a logo or stenciled design on
these walls, "capturing" the wall while their tag was there. If your team
has tags on zero walls, you're eliminated. The first team to get tags on
either a majority or maybe all of the walls wins.
I think the level of difficulty should increase as it goes on - maybe you
have to add a color or a layer each time you paint over another tag.
We should probably also involve alcohol in this somehow.
Any thoughts? Does this sound like fun? How could we make the rules better?

I have a special place in my heart for graffiti (it's my research topic and
more than likely the topic for my thesis). I'm totally in.

Perhaps a couple could be free hand rather than stencil...and trying to free
hand while shotgunning a beer is rough. Also, writing ain't easy when
somebody is throwing **** at you. Or humping your leg.
Taking a shot for each additional colour added on a piece would also add
some booze to the equation.
Challenge accepted. Who sells caps locally? (Been out of the game for a
minute)...

hrmmm.... we definitely need to get legit places to spray... possibly
build some graph walls in parking lots, where we have permission. No
need to get arrested for tagging. I think that's all the easy part
though.
the art is so subjective.. and teams can easily sabotage somebody's
other work by just spraying over it.
how about a "pre-team" creates stencils and distributes them to the
teams... each team has two stencils. Each team has ONE color of
paint. something along the lines of a collaborative art project.
Free-hand or team-provided stencils are acceptable, but each team must
use at least one "event provided" stencil per wall.
At the end, a team will photograph each wall and we show them at a
gallery or bar and we vote on the walls by applause. We can use a
decibel meter and record loudness levels. Loudest wall wins.
Just an idea... dunno how far this is from the Admiral's idea...

I have a crap ton of paint ready to go...
i think all of those ideas sound good. it should be easy enough to find
permission walls with as many burner friendly properties as there are
downtown.
and the decibel meter is genius.

Yeah I think these are all good thoughts. I def want legit walls, either pre-existing or purpose-built. The game mechanics are all up in the air - I'd like it to have a collaborative challenge or competitive aspect to it, I think that helps motivate people, but I'd also think the game mechanics need some flair, maybe doing the whole thing on roller skates or something. Maybe we add paintball blowguns to the equation and you can eliminate players that way.

paintball blowguns huh? hrmm... we'll need judges at each wall...
maybe more walls than there are teams... something about a penalty if
a team is caught by another team actively painting a wall.
Penalties are good... as are rewards.
I was thinking the award for the wall which gets the loudest applause
would go to the team which has the greatest amount of contribution to
the artistic nature of that wall... but that's pretty subjective too.
I like the rollerskate idea. How about all team members must be on at
least 3 non-motorized wheels at all times (unless sitting down)? One
human-powered bicycle or tricycle is allowed per team. Knee pads are
suggested but optional.

I think Chromie's direction of creating the best collaborative art pieces is
the best way to take this. what if each team has a wall, and they pick the
wall's theme. They also have stencils, based on their wall's theme, with
which they can paint on the other team's walls. So theres 20 walls/teams,
for instance, and each time you paint on another wall, you get a stamp from
that team. Once you get 10 stamps, you stop painting. The idea isn't a race,
but to contribute your team's theme in the best way possible to the theme of
the wall you come upon. Then we could do the judging at the "afterparty" in
the park like idiotarod, or a parade past all the walls if they were close
enough together.
Obviously rules regarding non-motorized vehicles, etc would still be a go.
Thoughts?

Use "reply-all" to send your reply to the list.
Ideas:
Each team is fully responsible for their wall. This includes
securing/procuring their wall. This could be through an agreement
with a local property owner to paint on a wall, or to secure land to
build a "wall" to be painted. Teams could supply drinks, shade,
music, etc...
Awards could be given for best theme, best implementation of a theme,
best transportation, best "wall", best painted wall, etc...

Maybe "Graffiti Festival" is a better way to approach this - make a day of
publicly doing legal, collaborative, beautiful street art. I like that teams
procure their own wall (Even if it's mobile... hmmm...) but we might want to
have some resources available on how to do that. Your theme would tie in
your wall, your transport, your beverages perhaps... But I still think it
needs a hook of some sort... a competitive or edgy aspect to it that will
get the participants excited.
