Just a short word.....last night as I was drifting off to sleep, I put
on his lecture on Beethoven's "Waldstein". It is not to be missed. He
brings a Gouldian depth to his insights and coupled with a fabulous
technique, sensitivities and respect for the ultimate "urtext" meanings
including paying close attention to Beethoven's own hand written notes
for how the piece is to be played, I found that lecture to be one of the
finest I've ever heard. I hope to make my way through the rest of his
fascinating lectures....a worthwhile adventure. GG would be pleased at
all that insight.
Cheers,
Fred Houpt

Hi Mary et al
The Internet never forgets, with cunning and thinking arond the corners one should at least in theory be able to find almost everything.
I was able to locate some of these lectures as an iTunes podcast here:
http://itunes.apple.com/ch/artist/guardian-co-uk/id136731196
Wether they are complete I cannot say, just scroll down and you should see them, starting at 100.
The podcast directory with the mp3 files can be found here:

Just a short
word.....last night as I was drifting off to sleep, I put on his lecture on
Beethoven's "Waldstein". It is not to be missed. He brings a
Gouldian depth to his insights and coupled with a fabulous technique,
sensitivities and respect for the ultimate "urtext" meanings including paying
close attention to Beethoven's own hand written notes for how the piece is to be
played, I found that lecture to be one of the finest I've ever heard. I hope to
make my way through the rest of his fascinating lectures....a worthwhile
adventure. GG would be pleased at all that insight.
Cheers,
Fred

Marco,
I had thought of that but I didn't give it a try. It makes sense. Thanks for the advice.
The Guardian deserves enormous credit for offering these lectures.
I think The Guardian also still offers a lot of goodies from the Hay Festival of Literature but in
honour of Nuncle allow me to say: be an active sleuth and find the links yourselves.

Try:
It has the first 4 sonatas, and you can find some others if you scroll to the bottom of the page. The link to Wigmore Hall doesn't seem to be working, and I think that's where you will find the complete lectures rather than 1-lecture-per-sonata, as above. Google might help but I've run out of time. Regards,

Yes, Parts One through Three are at the bottom of the page and they no longer work.
These Beethoven Lectures are not at Wigmore Hall site but Schiff's Haydn lectures are there and they are terrific.
Pat, thanks for the sleuthing - I'm gonna give your solution a try.

He brings a Gouldian depth to his insights and coupled with a fabulous technique, sensitivities and respect for the ultimate "urtext" meanings including paying close attention to Beethoven's own hand written notes for how the piece is to be played, I found that lecture to be one of the finest I've ever heard. I hope to make my way through the rest of his fascinating lectures....a worthwhile adventure. GG would be pleased at all that insight.
Cheers,
Fred Houpt

Regards,

I did a swift Google and found . The lectures are in reverse order, so 1-3 are at the bottom of the list.

In fact, it is impossible to listen to the first
sonatas in streaming, but I've had no problem in
downloading them from the Guardian site.
Good luck!

Marco,
I had thought of that but I didn't give it a try.

Just a
short word.....last night as I was drifting off to sleep, I put on his

They all work via "streaming" too indeed, it's a matter of browser, make sure to use Firefox or Chrome latest versions, 'cause with older browsers like IE7you have to wait the file is fully downloaded in the cache before the mp3 player page opens (first time only of course until you will delete the cache) and depending on your connection speed it can require several minutes ;)
