Attention Animators, Modelers, Producers, and Composers/Sound Designers:
2 years ago we created the DePaul Game Experience, a 6-month student project team designed to create a top-quality student game. The results were spectacular: 2 IGF wins in 2 years, 100's of thousands of YouTube views, 10's of thousands of downloads, huge international media attention, and best of all-portfolio material that has helped graduates get good jobs.
A few months ago I was discussing the DGE process with Josh and Devin, and we realized that it could also work for creating a student animated short film for festival competition. A high quality Maya film is difficult to complete in the standard school structure, and it needs a committed, hard-working team-similar to that needed for a game. The brainstorming phase and organizational structure that we've used for DGE fits very well for a small animation studio. The goal for this project would be to compete in SIGGRAPH, the Ottawa Animation Festival (the largest in North America) and the Student Academy Awards, among others. The project will be designed to work within a realistic scope for the team and the time constraints.
To make this a reality we're creating the DePaul Animated Film Team!
YOU will be the creators of the film (we won't be using pre-existing scripts or story ideas, so an open and slightly-DAFT mind is a prereq). Faculty will advise and mentor. This project is open to both graduate and undergraduate students, and students graduating in June may apply. You'll need to commit to a summer-long production schedule beginning in June, and be willing to work hard. Core team members will continue to work on post-production through the fall and winter to prepare for festival deadlines in April 2012. The team will be comprised of 10-12 of the best at:
* Animation
* Modeling
* Rigging
* Texturing
* Storyboards
* Character design
* Effects/dynamics
* Lighting
* Sound design/music
* Producing
Are you DAFT?!
To apply you need to email the following materials by Thursday, June 2nd to State in your email why we need you on our team, and what role(s) you'd like to perform. We may conduct some in-person interviews if necessary, beginning Friday, June 3rd.
What to submit:
All applicants must submit a resume. You should also submit the materials below, depending on the position(s) you're applying for. Applications that don't include all the materials will still be looked at, so apply with what you've got.
Animators/Modelers: a portfolio that includes 6 samples of your best work (drawings, images of 3D models, images of design work, and/or links to movies showing your work on Vimeo/YouTube). We expect high-level creative work that goes above and beyond assignments.
Producers: a one-page summary of what makes you qualified to help schedule and organize a large team project. Previous experience putting clothes on monkeys is a plus!
Sound Designers: A two minute sound reel or 3 examples of your work (ADR, Foley, Dialog Editing, SFX Recording and editing, Mixing, Music)
This will be highly competitive selection process. The full-time Animation faculty will all be helping out in some capacity as advisors and selecting the team from the applicants. Send any questions my way.
Thanks!
