We have a winner. Althouse is spot on as to why Obama finally released the
birth certificate. Although her last sentence doesn't quite follow.

You mean:
But he could have thought it was demeaning to have to do this, so I'm inclined to give him a pass. ?

Sure. Because it it ridiculously demeaning. No other President has had to prove citizenship against such flimsy evidence (the Birthers never had compelling evidence). It's demeaning that the previous certificate of live birth was not good enough.

And now that this is settled, Trump wants to go after Obama's education. Trump is simply a performer, and nothing indicates he would be a good president, so he is doing this dumbass circus stuff.

No other president has had so many foreign ... entanglements.

Obama's "worldliness" was a selling point to a lot of people, no surprise
that it is a negative to others.

It is not demeaning to prove who you are, nor to assure people you meet the
requirements of the constitution. In fact, as a former Constitutional
Professor, he should have been proud to do so.

And yes another candidate did have to run a similar gamut, John McCain, who
dealt with his case in 2000 as I recall. He dealt with it proactively.

To Althouse's point, I had wondered by Obama didn't let the Republicans stew
in the controversy a little longer. If Trump is going to be a player in the
upcoming election, let him go further out onto the limb.

It seems he thought he had done so, only the birthers weren't satisfied. And
many of them probably won't be satisfied with this latest gesture.

The burden of proof rests on the one who makes the assertion. If Obama is
the one asserting that he was born in the U.S., then it is up to him to
prove it, and no one is obliged to believe it just on his say-so. (Of
course, we then get to the question of *standards* of proof...)

By the same token, of course, if anyone was asserting that Obama was born
in a specific place that was *not* the U.S., then the burden of proof
would be on them to prove *that* assertion, too. And I guess Obama had to
be born *somewhere*, so maybe *everyone* had a burden of proof to meet.

I agree. As I've said before, if it was good enough to get him a passport
or a driver's license, etc., I don't see why it shouldn't have been good
enough for this.

You mean, "Obama never finished university, where's his diploma"? Trump's
saying something along *those* lines now?

But even if he were ... so what? Since when does the Constitution require
a certain level of *education* for the presidency?

Well, since the one he released was a transcription not the real document
there is a valid argument to say that it was not the real deal.

And yes, some will never be satisfied. But at least he can honestly say he
has done what they ask. The document removes any reasonable question.
