Following up the subject of Heifer International.

It has very influential supporters. One of them is Ellen DeGeneres. She obviously loves animals, but it looks like she is confused and inconsistent in the way she expresses her position. She recently became vegan, but her name is listed as a supporter of Heifer International.

I don't think there is hope to convince Oprah (who is another supporter), but with Ellen there might be a better chance.
Since she has a huge audience I think it is worth trying.
She just posted on her blog about her and Portia's support to The Gentle Barn sanctuary for farm animals
http://ellen.warnerbros.com/2010/05/help_the_gentle_barn_to_rescue_60_cows_0503.php

I used the comment section to ask her to stop supporting Heifer. They posted it. I probably could write a little bit less clumsy, if I knew that it will be posted, but may be someone else will be interested to live a comprehensive and gentle suggestion.
Especially that many people possibly read the comments and those readers could be supporters of "humane" farming.

Ellen, who wants to be vegan, seems unable to grasp

written this before - I think it is not my place to tell people who are
hungry not to have farm animals. What I need to do is figure out how
world food distribution systems can be changed so that everyone has
access to/can grow good quality plant foods..(.And then there's always

Somebody mentioned a vegan food relief group in the UK. I don't know if

production. If they do, let's tell Ellen.

on long-term changes/projects like well- and
garden-building and also come in with emergencies
when they have the resources. They are so small,
though, and not so well-known that they could
definitely use the support.

Also HIPPO helps the hungry. I forget where
they're based, but I believe it's in one of the
African countries.

That Heifer staffer is an idiot. If s/he's so
concerned about the politics of the global north
affecting the global south (which, duh, is the crux
of the problem) then s/he should go work for a
different organization.

If someone were starving to death and stealing
babies from an orphanage to eat to keep from dying,
we wouldn't even be having this discussion. We'd
be having one that said: let's get to the source of
the hunger so no one has to keep eating humans.

That's one of the reasons also I think Heifer is
full of ****. They're just perpetuating the myth
that animals are here for us, and that animal flesh
is the best way to nourish people.

It is a conundrum because I do think that people
don't deserve to starve to death! And yet are
animal deaths any less severe than human deaths?

http://ellen.warnerbros.com/2010/05/help_the_gentle_barn_to_rescue_60_cows_0503.php

I used the comment section to ask her to stop supporting Heifer. They posted it. I probably could write a little bit less clumsy, if I knew that it will be posted, but may be someone else will be interested to live a comprehensive and gentle suggestion.
Especially that many people possibly read the comments and those readers could be supporters of "humane" farming.

distinction between eating vegan and being vegan is
difficult for the general public to understand, but
Ellen, who wants to be vegan, seems unable to grasp
that doing Cover Girl commercials for P&G is not

written this before - I think it is not my place to tell people who are
hungry not to have farm animals. What I need to do is figure out how

Many families in Rwanda have back yard chickens for the eggs. How

organization in Uganda that urges people to adopt a plant-based diet. I
think the best thing we can do is support these types of organizations.
Somebody mentioned a vegan food relief group in the UK. I don't know if
they also work on restructuring for vegetable, fruit and grain

Yes, Wendy, I agree, it would be nice if people get more educated about what vegan means and stop supporting animal exploitation.
No, there were no comments on my comment. There were cheering comments on Ellen's support of Gentle Barn. Which is still nice, exept people somehow think that it is good to support ABUSED farm animals, as if there are also NON ABUSED farm animals in the world. I didn't get a feeling that they understand that as long as we consume animal products we generate farm animals abuse. I guess the idea of supporting a sunctuary is used as a good balance for inner conscience by some.

There was good comment left by Rina. Thanks, Rina.

Somebody mentioned a vegan food relief group in the UK. I don't know if

Gentle Barn is a sanctuary. Ellen DeGeneres mentioned it on her site and asked for support of it
http://ellen.warnerbros.com/2010/05/help_the_gentle_barn_to_rescue_60_cows_0503.php
at the same time she also supports Heifer International. She is probably very confused.

Especially that many people possibly read the comments and those readers could be supporters of "humane" farming.

lesson in what being vegan means. I think the
distinction between eating vegan and being vegan is
difficult for the general public to understand, but
Ellen, who wants to be vegan, seems unable to grasp
that doing Cover Girl commercials for P&G is not
vegan, neither is supporting St Jude's or any other
charity that uses animal testing.

Lidia, have you gotten any responses to your comment?

few years back. She said she understood my position..... I might have
written this before - I think it is not my place to tell people who are
hungry not to have farm animals. What I need to do is figure out how
world food distribution systems can be changed so that everyone has
access to/can grow good quality plant foods..(.And then there's always
the issue everyone hides from - voluntary human population control)..
Many families in Rwanda have back yard chickens for the eggs. How
could I tell them not to unless I can provide alternative food sources
and income?.... On the other hand, there is an animal rights
organization in Uganda that urges people to adopt a plant-based diet. I
think the best thing we can do is support these types of organizations.
Somebody mentioned a vegan food relief group in the UK. I don't know if
they also work on restructuring for vegetable, fruit and grain

Thanks, Rina.

the whole comments section; it's as if I need to
scroll to the right but there is no scroll bar to
do it. Very frustrating. Not everyone has a
mega-sized monitor!

What is Gentle Farm? Is it vegan based, animal help, not hurt?

Gentle Barn is a sanctuary. Ellen DeGeneres mentioned it on her site and asked for support of it
http://ellen.warnerbros.com/2010/05/help_the_gentle_barn_to_rescue_60_cows_0503.php
at the same time she also supports Heifer International. She is probably very confused.

The last one was pretty informative about dairy http://ellen.warnerbros.com/2010/05/help_the_gentle_barn_to_rescue_60_cows_0503.php
I wish Helen's site would allow to go deeper into the subject, I guess it was enough for them to have 3 pro vegan comments out of 13, rather then simple cheering.
Even though it is good that Helen asked people to help to rescue the cows from the closing near by dairy farm, it would be wonderful if her supporters realize, that if it were not for them (and many of us before we became vegan) many cows would not need to be rescued.
Too bad that they didn't allow your comment.

Lidia
