The From email on this post is no good. So I will post to the list instead.
Any chance that they are a Lithops? Take a look at some of these. I don't know
of a plant called "donkey's hooves", but these certainly look like hooves.

I would really appreciate info on Blueberries and potatoes. I searched some of the archives, and found that several of the publications listed take me to an A T & T page. One is on the Seven Steps for growing Tomatoes, another was on potatoes. I have researched on Blueberries, need to know about sunlight, if they need afternoon shade. Thanks, Rose Ann

Hi,
I was wondering what the most effective and environmentally friendly way is to kill weeds/grass in preparation for laying flagstone, pavers, or gravel beds. I've heard boiling water, salt, vinegar, and merely covering with black plastic, which I will do anyway, can be effective. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

We are installing Bobsod this week-end, trying to take advantage of the cooler weather, what prep should we do? Sprinklers are in, and the ground is clear.
Do we loosen the soil?

We have 3 passion fruit vines that do very well in our back yard. Monarch butterflies LOVE them. Every day at least 4 are hovering in our backyard concentrated around the passion fruit plants. Recently a lot of caterpillars (colorful, get 2" long with lots of black ****es) appeared on the vines and within a week every leaf was gone! We did not pull them off - figured they were Monarch butterfly caterpillars and the plant would survive. Will they survive with no leaves now? Were those monarchs?
Thanks

Thanks

Dear Gardener,
I'm trying to find a couple of cacti, succulents or xeriscape perennials that will grow in this situation: Total shade during most of winter and full sun during most of summer.
The location is the north side of apartment (painted white) with a 6-ft wall (also white) adjoining at east end. It is basically a single-car parking space but the 6 feet adjacent to apartment can be used for planting.
On September 22, 2009 I planted an Agave geminiflora and a Aloe vera (barbadensis?)in this area. Neither seems to be thriving. I water them sparingly (abstaining if rain) during winter and 1-2/month during summer. They probably need another year or two to establish/adjust. Are there any plants you can suggest for filling in this area?
Please comment if the water regimen needs an adjustment.
Thank you.
Larry

Thanks!

We planted a Texas Mountain Laurel about 1 1/2 months ago. We are watering 2 times a week. Many of the leaves are turning yellowish. Are we watering too much? Or are we not watering enough?

Hand weeding is likely the only way to be rid of Burr Clover.
Fortunately it's not too difficult to remove if you get the taproot.

Thanks!

We planted a Texas Mountain Laurel about 1 1/2 months ago. We are watering 2 times a week. Many of the leaves are turning yellowish. Are we watering too much? Or are we not watering enough?

Thank you.

I have a client who has an ocotillo in a courtyard that faces norht. It does not get much sun-only when the suun is overhead in the summertime. The branches have been opening over time and now some have fallen to the ground!
I am thinking it just doesnt get enough sun to make it in this spot. Your thoughts? Thanks!

I am having a problem with Burr Medic growing in my lawn. I have St. Augustine grass, so I can't use Weed & Feed. What is the best way to get rid of this pesky weed. Also, can you recommend the best type of fertilizer for St. Augustine grass.
Thanks a lot,

Hand weeding is likely the only way to be rid of Burr Clover.
Fortunately it's not too difficult to remove if you get the taproot.

Grapes are typically planted in spring, after the threat of frost has
passed.
Most trellises you'll find on an internet search are for winegrapes. These
are designed to place the fruit at a comfortable height for care and
picking, but can get expensive. You can use anything from a single piece of
wire to an arbor.
Grapes will produce clusters the first year, and winegrape growers recommend
removing all fruit for the first couple of years. This is just to make sure
the plants have established a good root system before allowing them to
produce a crop. In the desert, people often cheat a little and let fruit
ripen the second year if they had a good first year of growth.
Here's a link to a site on growing table grapes in Texas. It's not Arizona,
but much of the advice is general and will apply. They also discuss some of
the table grape varieties.

Here are some AZ specific recommendations, for winegrapes:

What is the best time to plant grapes (table) in Sun City? Is there any
literature on this topic available from you folks? Thank you.

One variety of my tomatoes split accross the body of the tomato this year. I have had them split from the stem before but this year horizontaly. I once read that splitting was caused by uneaven watering so this year I am watering on a drip line every onther day. Still the splitting and worse than ever. Thank you.

I had a Mineola tree in a pot with some shade and it was doing well. Recently I had it planted in full sun and now the leaves are burning. Is there something I should cover it with or it just adjusting to the full sun?

In March, I applied two feedings of weed and feed fertilizer on my bermuda lawn about three weeks apart. I am afraid that my actions have caused the grass to die as it has not responded to the warm weather as in previous years. If so, can you recommend remedial action?
Sincerely,
