Is it possible to grow blueberries in the Scottsdale area? Also, I had an avocado tree at my last house in McCormick Ranch that produced about 20 avocados a year. Is it a desert variety?? Where would I get it?

I have peach bearing trees that the wind has damaged. The trees are about 8 years old. Many of the big branches with fruit are broken. The limbs are on the ground. Can the trees be sal****ed? What can I do?

Thanks,
Rosalie

I have a number of plants that are being besieged by flat-globe dodder--mostly turpentine bushes. Is there any way to eradicate it? Does it do any good to rip the dodder off the plant? Thanks!

Hello,

Last year I had two vitex trees planted, they receive afternoon sun and were planted in the grass. They both receive water by garden hose, with a slow water flow about once a week for 1-2 hours. Both trees leafed out fine and have begun to develop their floral structures. Recently I noticed that the tips these structures have begun to die back and the leaves below the structres are small and contorted. I have not noticed any insect presence on either plant. Also, last years floral structures have not been pruned off.

Thank you for your time.

I built a raised garden bed, using treated lumber for the border.
And now have read that there is health concerns with treated lumber.
Do you think I could have poison leaching into the actual garden soil...???
If that possibility does exist, is there some way to test a soil sample..??

We have a texas tipu in our backyard. This spring leaves came out on only about half the tree. The other main limb only has couple of branches with leaves on it. What do you think is going on? Does it have some sort of disease? I've never seen it do this before. The tree is about 15 years old. Thanks, Genie Swanstrom

I no longer wish to use a pest control company due to my new garden and large koi pond. What environmentally friendly way can I keep bugs (especially ants) at bay? Are there certain powders or sprays that would be safe around my koi pond?

I have a tomato plant that is in a pot. I have been watering to keep the soil moist. Now the leaves have started to curl and some have turned yellow (just a few). Some leaves also have holes in them although I can not see any insects. Any idea what is going on? The plant has lots of tomatoes--I just waiting for them to ripen.
Thanks

We removed a large oleander approx 1 month ago. Is it safe to plant vegetables in the soil where the roots where and some still are? I am making a sunken garden mulch type garden.

Thanks

I am thinking of planting giant clumping timber bamboo as suggested in one of the Phoenix Magazine articles.
My question is - How well does this type of bamboo do in Mesa? or can it even be grown in this part of the valley? Are there any special requirements I should be aware of due to the height of the canes?
Thank you,
Don Hicks

Is it possible to grow blueberries in the Scottsdale area? Also, I had an avocado tree at my last house in McCormick Ranch that produced about 20 avocados a year. Is it a desert variety?? Where would I get it?

We live next to a large open field in peoria arizona and are being invaded by trillions of little flys. They are killing off my garden and fruit trees along our back cinderblock wall. They are so tiny and I've tried Ortho bug spray, cedar oil spray and mixed dish soap and vinegar and nothing will effect them. I have called the city to ask the owner of the land for help. What can I use to kill them and how long will this last. This has been going on for a couple weeks now. I would appreciate any help you could give me.

We planted two seedless desert willows (Art's Seedless and Timeless Beauty) this past spring and both have bloomed well. However, we now have many panicles with spent blossoms on the tree. Should we be cutting the panicles off the tree to encourage more blooming? Will more blossoms form on these panicles?

Similarly for the Orange Jubilee and Tecoma Sunrise bushes we planted? Do we remove the panicles with spent blossoms?

Texas Mountain Laurel is my most favorite plant and flower in this area.Question: I've noticed not all plants poduce seed pods- are there male and female of this plant?
During seed pod formation some plants get little caterpillars on the seed pods and chew on them with a secreation of sticky sap, at this point the seed pods stop forming; and yet a plant right next to it is not attacted by the caterpillars, any reason they eat one plant and not the other?

I have a tomato plant that is in a pot. I have been watering to keep the soil moist. Now the leaves have started to curl and some have turned yellow (just a few). Some leaves also have holes in them although I can not see any insects. Any idea what is going on? The plant has lots of tomatoes--I just waiting for them to ripen.
Thanks

During seed pod formation some plants get little caterpillars on the seed pods and chew on them with a secreation of sticky sap, at this point the seed pods stop forming; and yet a plant right next to it is not attacted by the caterpillars, any reason they eat one plant and not the other?

Is it possible to grow blueberries in the Scottsdale area? Also, I had an avocado tree at my last house in McCormick Ranch that produced about 20 avocados a year. Is it a desert variety?? Where would I get it?

I've had bad luck with Feb/March planted tomatoes the last 2 years in my raised beds, even rotating the bed they're in. They're dying from the bottom up after producing fruit once. Many have blossom end rot, so obviously my watering isn't what I think! I'm considering removing a few roses in my 10 X 20 rose bed (that also has various annuals) to try in-ground tomatoes. Will veggies, specifically tomatoes, work better there where it will be easier to control water? Or will nearby rose fertilizer be detrimental to the veggies? Thank you!

What type of spot will be the best for blooming(sun, shade, etc.)My other bulbs (paper whites, summer snow flakes, daffadils, star of bethlehem, fressias, african corn flowers) I am digging now and replanting in the fall. Thank you, Ron Miller 623 398 5493.

Thanks,

Thanks

I am thinking of planting giant clumping timber bamboo as suggested in one of the Phoenix Magazine articles.
My question is - How well does this type of bamboo do in Mesa? or can it even be grown in this part of the valley? Are there any special requirements I should be aware of due to the height of the canes?
Thank you,
Don Hicks

I've had bad luck with Feb/March planted tomatoes the last 2 years in my raised beds, even rotating the bed they're in. They're dying from the bottom up after producing fruit once. Many have blossom end rot, so obviously my watering isn't what I think! I'm considering removing a few roses in my 10 X 20 rose bed (that also has various annuals) to try in-ground tomatoes. Will veggies, specifically tomatoes, work better there where it will be easier to control water? Or will nearby rose fertilizer be detrimental to the veggies? Thank you!
