Thanks for this, Gabe. Very nostalgic....

We grew up listening to Connie Francis on this. I guess it was a
favourite of our parents' generation (of the 1950s or thereabouts). Or
maybe it was just the staple fair available on the 33-1/3 and 45 rpms
available on long- and short-playing records in those times.

There were also others like The Platters, Porgy and Bess, The King and
I, The Sound of Music, and what not. Solid stuff from the days when
the sun was yet to (fully) set on the Empire. If I recall right, The
Sound of Music was also lovely anti-Nazi stuff, that tugged at the
heartstrings rather than being directed at the brain. Some of my
Austrian friends told me that it was virtually unknown in their part
of the world, I recall vaguely!

About Frances, lots of details about her life here (thanks to Wikipedia):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connie_Frances
Two aspects -- her considering medical school, and her support for
Richard Nixon -- reminded me of Goa's own Rita Faria (and the row over
her decision to perform for US armymen in Vietnam).

Nana Mouskouri was the better of the two! Now what's left to be done
is just to get a Konkani version of this out, and make sure we get a
wider, global audience for it. Are Francis Rodrigues, and the other
adept translators tuned in?

) Talking about songs ... I am sure most folks on GoaNet may have heard of the old man, Ray Charles. Well, I never bought any music by this artist but recently I came across his rendition of a song named 'A Song For You'. I must say, so got to listen to this one - its a classic!

The song was originally written by Leon Russell, but this guy improvised it and sings it better than the original.

Check out an old grainy video here:
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xnm0h_ray-charles-a-song-for-you_music

I finally bought it from iTunes and its worth every cent I paid for it.

The song was originally written by Leon Russell, but this guy improvised it and sings it better than the original.

have you heard of any old konkani songs!

Well I have a collection of a few songs and would like to have more...right
now
you can hear some of them for the firs time...My tribute to the singers....

http://edskantaram.blogspot.com/

I understand from my friends that All India Radio Panjim FM broadcastss old
konkani songs between 1.30-2 pm on 105.4 FM
and the audio quality is very good. So if you are around Panjim where the
signal is more clear, you can record these
songs on the audio cassettes..You may not be able to hear these songs for
long and since these songs are not
available this is the only way you can listen and preserve our old konkani
songs...Last week a friend of mine
send me the recordings played on FM..song of Alfred Rose, C.Alvares, Minguel
Rod, Remmie Colaco, Kix Boxer etc
ofcourse he just sent me a sample recorded on him mobile...but still they
wer audible...if you can are able to do this
pls do send me a copy.....yeah now i know some of u will say this not the
right way...but this is the only way
we can preserve our maim bhass...

The song was originally written by Leon Russell, but this guy improvised it and sings it better than the original.

) Talking about songs ...

I finally bought it from iTunes and its worth every cent I paid for it.
