You Canadians are off the hook for this one. Some terrifying things here:
http://www.newsweek.com/photo/2010/08/24/dumb-things-americans-believe.html
It's one of those slideshows with a little caption underneath each
image, so I can't post the whole story here, but some highlights:
* One out of five of us believe the sun revolves around the Earth
* One third of us believe the constitutional right to freedom of
religion was never meant to apply to groups most folks think are
extreme or fringe
* Up to 24% of us believe the President is a Muslim
* 21% of us believe there are real sorcerors, conjurers, and warlocks out there
* 41% of us believe in ESP
Kinda puts "the national debate" about, well, *anything* into context,
doesn't it?

Wonder what Newsweek's editorial staff's position on school vouchers is?

I don't (at least not in the classic 'life was spawned from random chance
and evolved over a bazillion years because there is no Creator God' sense).

To be fair, there /is/ some cause for this:

* 21% of us believe there are real sorcerors, conjurers, and warlocks out
there
This doesn't surprise me. If anything, perhaps this explains how intelligent
people can observe strange things happening as a result of activity in the
supernatural realm as it relates to the natural realm. Paley referred to the
idea of the 'secret gardner;' you may not see the gardner himself, but you
can see the results of his labor.

I have a feeling the poll question was completely without nuance? "Do you
believe in evolution?" is a question that demands qualifiers and those aren't
usually available in a poll.
Based on what I assume would be the question and the unwillingness, (not out of
spite or any intent other than to do their job of conducting the poll as
presented), of the pollster to define the terms I'd probably answer no or
unsure.
A more accurate poll on this question would explore some of those issues.

You can take Obama's words and wonder. Anyone remember the "my muslim faith"
gaffe on George Steponallofus' Sunday morning talk show a while back? George
had to jump in and correct him.
I don't believe he is a muslim but to act as if there is no cause whatsoever to
wonder reveals a political agenda not necessarily the ignorance of the ones
responding to the poll.

Yes. One really needs to define exactly what is meant by "evolution".

I'd like to see just how this question was framed.

Well, if we believe in the supernatural (and as Christians, we do), would
this necessarily be all that odd a belief? I mean, what is it that these
people believe: that there are wizards out there with magic wands and
pointy hats, wizards who can turn people to stone etc.? Or do they simply
believe that there are people out there who dabble in the occult etc.?
> * 41% of us believe in ESP
Must be all the baby boomers. ESP is sooooo 1960s.
