As I understand it, the law will also help to protect the citizens that are being kidnapped in
Arizona and being taken to Mexico for ransom.

I do not think Conrad is overreacting. There is a new law in AZ either just passed or about to be passed which me reeks of fascism and has the sound of Nazi jackboots marching. In will allow people to be asked for identification at ANY time without any probable cause and if you can't prove you are legal you are gone. It's an ugly law. Now AZ and NM and TX have long born the brunt of illegal immigration from Mexico and the burden on the infrastructure there has been heavy particularly in health care. So the motivation is understandable, but, in my opinion this response is horrible. So, Conrad, as the grandson of immigrants who fled the Czar and one who remembers that 90% of those that survived the pogroms were killed in the Holocaust, I definitely support your decision. Acts of racial and ethnic intolerance must be fought against at all times. I was planning on going (really looking forward to it) and was obviously well aware of the current situation but had not reall!
y thought of an act of protest. This is a good one. I will not go and I will address a letter to the governor's office to this effect.

Issues like these are never simple but it helps to understand the
complexity by understanding both sides. Arizonans are understandably
upset about the costs of immigrant care that they need to accept without
complaint and wage depression that occurs because of the cheap labor
from illegal workers causing tremendous downward labor costs. Anyone who
supports unions should understand why this can be a concern.

Coupled with that is a very different way illegal immigrants are treated
in the same country and is decrying Arizona's treatment of them. Check
out this article that shows that the Mexican authorities do not
necessarily believe that it best to treat others as you would like to be
treated.

I also have made a vow never to spend a future dime in AZ in the future.
Long story but if you go, watch those cameras! I incurred 3 tickets in

I

Now can you see why I would not travel to AZ at this time. The guy is from
my hometown. It could easily be me if I was driving my large van ( it
looks similar to what they use to transport farmworkers) that has tinted
windows, and carrying passengers. Say I decided to stop at a rest stop,
Mexican music blaring away, all speaking Spanish, would they ask for all
our birth certificates?

I also have made a vow never to spend a future dime in AZ in the future.
Long story but if you go, watch those cameras!  I incurred 3 tickets in
5
minutes that I was totally unaware of coming from a "Live Free or Die"
state
where a HUMAN tells you that you've been speeding so you can slow down.
I
was in rental car and had no idea I'd gotten one let alone 3.  I fought
it
to deaf ears and an obviously very broken system.  Cost me over $800 and
again, the nightmare is too long to go into with all the system
breakdown
details, but suffice to say, I've sworn off AZ forever, sadly, as I
truly
enjoyed Sedona.

This may show up twice on the list serve, my apologies if it does. The
first time was just a quick reaction to the Arizona word.
As an American of Hispanic descent who's grandparents came to the USA
fleeing Pancho Villa and his Army.  I will NOT be attending any
conferences in Arizona. I do not need the hassle because of my looks and

race of potentially being asked for proof of my citizenship. It may not
ever happen and I could be overreacting but again the chance of it
occurring  increases while in Arizona.
Hope you enjoy the conference and find a roommate Dena.

Racial profiling has started in AZ even though the law is not in effect .
See 3 minute clip.

Check
out this article that shows that the Mexican authorities do not
necessarily believe that it best to treat others as you would like to be
treated.

Yeah, I'm not going anywhere in AZ either. Hey, I get it that people are
upset about the state of the union and "all those gosh darn immigrants",
and
I know about the narco trafficking, and murder, and whatnot. But
Arizonans
are taking out their frustrations out on immigrants who are in many
cases
"invited" in by Immigration's blind eye to serve industries, like
agribusiness, that ought to be better policed in the first place. The
gov.
of AZ is just trying to score cheap political capital with the worst
elements of her election base, and I don't like it. John Stewart said it

Its interesting that when a state or city try to reinforce a law that's
ALREADY on the books, folks become so negative and fail to look at the real
problem....no more money to support more people. The crime has already been
done...here illegally! Appears that we, as a Americans can no longer ignore
that problem. The road to fix this will be long and painfully bumpy, but
necessary. I hope neighboring states pass similar laws to reinforce what
should already be done! I expect to see a lot of media drama in the near
future with more focus on the adverse incidents. Hopefully the numbers of
these incidents are small. It's about time a State made a bold move and not
wait on the Federal government to help, otherwise, it would still be
waiting...

I know that drivers with CDLs must show proficiency in English when they are
stopped. If he answered the questions "wrong", they may have thought he
didn't know English well enough and then asked for further documents. He
had a pretty strong accent for someone who was born in the USA. Vicki
